Assignment 1.1 - Introduction

Hi, I'm Kate Scott. I'm in my second semester of the MA in Art and Art Education w/K-12 Initial Certification program. I have a BFA in Painting and Creative Writing from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MS in Art & Design History from Pratt Institute.

I've mostly worked in Arts Administration, but I got a job teaching high school art at Success Academy Charter High School for the Liberal Arts - Manhattan for the 24-25 school year, which led me to pursue my certification at TC so I can work for the NYCDOE and join the United Federation of Teachers. I currently work at the Gottesman Libraries as an Art and Design Associate, so if you see any posters, labels, or other printed ephemera for exhibitions in the library, there's a 50% chance I designed and installed them. Otherwise, it was my co-worker, Kai!

On the side, I write, perform, and run board with my sketch comedy team, Road House. I also work as an on-air radio host on 89.5 WMOT, an NPR Music affiliate based in Nashville, TN. My experience with technology, other than regular daily use (text messaging, streaming, doomscrolling) is mostly as a graphic designer and deejay. For my design job, I use a combination of Canva and the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign). For my radio job, I use Audacity to record and edit my breaks. I have a very simple setup, with a single mic and monitor. And for sketch, I use a soundboard, and various AV programs to project images/play digital media.

My artwork though, is grounded in more traditional processes and materials. Last semester in Advanced Sculpture, I made work that carries forth my previous painting series that explored attraction and repulsion through raw meat. Work and my artist statement can be viewed here
